Timothy Power

For Timothy Power, archaeology was never about dusting off old relics. It was about uncovering the lives of the people who left them behind.

Inspired by the British archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler, who believed the true essence of archaeology lies in human history rather than artifacts, Timothy built his career on that very idea. To him, ruins and fragments were not just objects—they were pieces of a much larger story.

Dive deeper into Abu Dhabi’s heritage and uncover the secrets of Al Hosn, a site that tells the story of the city’s past.

Where Legends Became Science

Growing up in Cornwall, England, Timothy was surrounded by tales of ancient stones and mythical giants. As a child, he was fascinated by the stories whispered through history, even if he didn’t fully understand their significance at the time.

That childhood curiosity grew into something more. Determined to unlock the secrets of ancient civilizations, he pursued a degree in archaeology at University College London (UCL), focusing on Egyptian history. But his biggest turning point came when he made a bold decision: booking a one-way ticket to Cairo to immerse himself in the Arab and Islamic world.

From Cairo to Abu Dhabi: A Life-Changing Twist of Fate

Timothy never planned on moving to the UAE. It happened by chance, or as he calls it, “a stroke of luck.”

When his parents relocated to Al Ain, he decided to visit and explore career opportunities in the region. That decision led him to a role as an archaeological consultant with the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi in 2009. His work took him to historic sites like Qasr Al Muwaiji, where he quickly realized that the UAE was not just another stop in his career, but a place filled with untold stories waiting to be uncovered.

Over time, Abu Dhabi became home, a place where his passion for history could thrive. His role went beyond excavations; he was helping to rewrite the narrative of the UAE’s past, ensuring its stories lived on for generations to come.

Bringing History to Life in Al Ain

Timothy’s journey eventually led him to teaching, where he took on a role at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi. But he didn’t want his students to simply study history; he wanted them to experience it firsthand.

He launched a research project focused on Al Ain’s five oases, guiding students on archaeological fieldwork and mapping historical sites. It was a project about documenting the past, but even more so, it was about reconnecting Emirati youth with their heritage in a way that felt real and tangible.

Their findings weren’t just academic exercises. They were showcased in the British Museum in London, placing Emirati history on the global stage.

Archaeology Tells the Story of Everyday Life

While archaeology explores grand landmarks like palaces and temples, Timothy finds just as much meaning in the smaller traces of human life. Fragments of pottery, discarded bones, and everyday objects all hold clues about the way people once lived, worked, and connected.

With his signature humor, he often jokes that centuries from now, archaeologists will likely be digging through layers of plastic and face masks from the pandemic era—a future historical record he calls "the COVID layer."

A Legacy Beyond Artifacts

For Timothy, the most valuable part of his work is not just in research and discoveries, but in the passion and curiosity he passes on to his students. Many of them have gone on to join major archaeological projects, continuing the search for their own history just as he did at the start of his journey.

He often says that every artifact holds a story, but what truly matters is the person who tells it. In his view, his greatest legacy is not just the findings he leaves behind, but the excitement and knowledge of archaeology that he instills in the next generation.
